ANTIQUES Road Trip saw a record-breaking item on the show that made show history.
The popular BBC format sees collectors and experts travel around the UK in a search to find precious art pieces and hidden treasure.
The experts in Antiques Road Trip were left absolutely shocked by a record breaking item[/caption] The old camera that was found in a remote shop fetched thousands at auction[/caption]But in an episode of Antiques Road Trip back in 2021, one of the expert got a lot more than he bargained for that later the team in tears.
Collector Paul Laidlaw came across an old camera in an antiques shop after the owner warned him that there was “stuff everywhere.”
The item was originally given a price of £75 as Paul offered £50 as a compromise.
After some bargaining, they settled at £60 as he explained: “What do you get for your money when you open it up? That looks like a peepside… and it is!
“I think this is a very early camera. If I’m right, that could be quite exciting.”
He added: “The photographic market is very much in the ascent, it’s a hot market, I think that’s a good thing.”
Paul later visited an auction in Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk with the old instrument.
The auctioneer named Edward Crichton was absolutely thrilled as he had “never seen” the subminiature camera.
He said: “We have carried out some research and cannot find any other example which has sold at auction.
“We were very excited to see this and it has certain potential to make a significant profit.”
As the sale started, multiple people jumped on the lines and the price started to rise by thousands.
The record for a general sale stood at £15,000 and although the price went into the five figures, Edward started to become cynical as he noted that it was not yet a “record price”.
But he was later left flabbergasted as the price kept rising as the bidding continued.
The price for the camera shot up to a record breaking price of £20,000 as Paul was left amazed.
A shocked Edward explained: “Most items in this sale make between £50 and £500, so £20,000 is staggering, wonderful.”
This meant that Paul gained £19,940, which easily beat the record set by a Tibetan bronze deity that Anita Manning previously bought.
Back in 2016, it was originally gained at a tiny amount of £50 and was sold for £3,800 back in 2016.
This meant the record has been totally smashed by over £16k.
